Senior European journalist suspended over AI-generated quotes

Peter Vandermeersch, a senior journalist and fellow at European publisher Mediahuis, was suspended after admitting he used AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and NotebookLM to summarize reports and published unverified, fabricated quotes in his Substack newsletter. An investigation by NRC found dozens of false quotes attributed to individuals who denied making those statements. Mediahuis emphasized its strict AI usage rules requiring human oversight and transparency, and also removed several of Vandermeersch's articles from the Irish Independent website.
