Why it matters
A rat king is a cluster of rats or mice whose tails become intertwined and bound together by materials such as hair, sap, or gum. The earliest report dates to 1564, with most specimens consisting of black rats; the largest known example, found in 1828 in Germany, comprises 32 rats. Modern sightings of living rat kings are extremely rare, with documented cases in Estonia (2005, 2021) and Russia (2021).
