South Korea's heavy dependence on international internet infrastructure routed through Japan, China, and Taiwan creates critical vulnerabilities that could paralyze the nation's digital economy during geopolitical crises or natural disasters. As neighboring Japan accelerates Arctic submarine cable projects (Polar Connect, Far North Fiber), South Korea must urgently develop independent submarine cable infrastructure to establish digital sovereignty. Without diversified internet pathways and self-reliant digital infrastructure, Korea risks losing competitive advantage in the AI era's emerging industries.
