UMD Scientists Create 'Smart Underwear' to Measure Human Flatulence

University of Maryland scientists developed 'Smart Underwear,' a wearable electrochemical sensor that clips onto underwear to continuously track intestinal gas (hydrogen) production. Their study found healthy adults average 32 flatus events per day—roughly double previous estimates based on self-reporting. The team is now launching the Human Flatus Atlas, a nationwide study to establish normal flatulence baselines and better understand gut microbial metabolism.
