Trump is threatening international students, and a new bill could help stop him

A bipartisan bill introduced by Reps. Liccardo (D-CA) and Obernolte (R-CA) seeks to codify Optional Practical Training (OPT), which lets international students work in the US for 12–24 months after graduation. The Trump administration has threatened to eliminate OPT as part of its immigration crackdown, despite the program's broad bipartisan support since 1992. Over half of F-1 visa holders have used OPT, with 165,524 STEM participants in 2024 alone.
