The Slow Collapse of MkDocs

MkDocs, a popular Python documentation tool used by over 90,000 GitHub projects, has fractured due to personality clashes between maintainers, an absent original author, and a controversial 2.0 release that broke compatibility with Material for MkDocs. The conflict escalated to a PyPI repository takeover in March 2026, and has spawned several competing successor projects including ProperDocs, MaterialX, and Zensical.
