Code Without Context: Why AI Development Needs Decision Artifacts

This article reveals a critical blind spot in AI-assisted software development: while AI excels at generating code, it cannot preserve the reasoning behind architectural decisions made during development. When these decisions live only in chat conversations, they disappear once the conversation ends, leading to silent architectural degradation and cascading technical debt that becomes expensive to fix. The proposed solution—documenting decisions as explicit artifacts rather than relying on conversations—highlights why reliability in AI development requires more than efficient code generation: it requires intentional decision preservation and role separation.
