Shooting-Free Days Decline in Major U.S. Cities

A Columbia University study published in JAMA Health Forum introduces shooting-free days (SFDs) and related metrics to measure gun violence prevention progress beyond traditional homicide counts. Analysis of the ten largest U.S. cities from 2015–2024 found that shooting-free days declined in all but one city (Jacksonville), with San Diego consistently safest and Chicago consistently worst. The researchers argue these peace-oriented metrics better capture prevention gains, non-fatal shootings, and sustained periods without violence.
