Most PDF fraud detection methods target easily-forged metadata fields, but this approach reveals why the PDF's internal index—the xref table—is fundamentally unforgeable. Because the PDF specification mandates that editors append new xref sections rather than overwrite existing ones, every modification leaves a permanent structural mark that cannot be cleanly erased without rebuilding the entire file.
