OpenAI is redirecting its research efforts toward building a fully automated AI researcher, a multi-agent system capable of independently tackling large, complex problems across math, science, and policy. The company plans to deliver an autonomous AI research intern by September and a full multi-agent research system by 2028, as outlined by chief scientist Jakub Pachocki.
