NLnet Grants Accelerate Oils Shell Progress, Expose Maintenance Bottleneck

The Oils shell project's retrospective on four years of NLnet grants demonstrates how targeted funding can measurably accelerate open source development, with clear wins in the Python-to-C++ implementation transition and Alpine Linux stress-testing. However, the project's experience also illuminates a persistent challenge in open source sustainability: increased community contributions can create a review backlog that eventually overwhelms maintainers, forcing projects to choose between rapid growth and sustainable maintenance.
