Mozilla to launch free built-in VPN in upcoming Firefox 149

Mozilla announced that Firefox 149, launching March 24, 2026, will include a free built-in VPN tier routing browser traffic through a proxy to hide users' IP addresses, initially offering 50GB monthly data in the US, France, Germany, and the UK. The move is positioned as a privacy-first alternative to free VPN services with hidden tradeoffs, consistent with Mozilla's data minimization principles. Other Firefox 149 additions include Split View, Tab Notes, and a rebranded "Smart Window" AI browsing assistant.
