GPU Concentration Reintroduces Regional Risk to Cloud Architecture

Cloud architecture spent a decade building redundancy across availability zones, but AI infrastructure is reversing this trend due to physical constraints. GPU clusters require 3–10MW of dedicated power, specialized cooling, and high-density fabric connectivity that force infrastructure to concentrate in single regions rather than distribute across zones. The June 1 Azure Copilot outage illustrated the severity: when concentrated GPU infrastructure fails, systems suffer complete capability loss rather than graceful degradation.
