I Built a Free REST API for Kenya's 47 Counties, 290 Constituencies, and 1,450 Wards

Developers created the Mipaka API to provide open access to African administrative geographic data—from Kenya's 47 counties to 500 years of border changes in the DRC—filling a critical infrastructure gap for African developers. Beyond technical utility, the API preserves colonial-era place names and historical administrative divisions, documenting how borders and geography have been shaped by historical events. This demonstrates the importance of open geographic data in supporting both African tech communities and historical preservation.
