Hyperlinks in Terminal Emulators

Terminal emulators have traditionally auto-detected URLs onscreen, but since spring 2017, GNOME Terminal and iTerm2 introduced support for OSC 8 escape sequences that allow arbitrary text to become clickable hyperlinks, similar to HTML links. The feature uses an OSC 8 escape sequence syntax to open and close hyperlinks, with potential use cases including linking bug IDs, git commit hashes, and local files in CLI tools.
