HP has new incentive to stop blocking third-party ink in its printers

The International Imaging Technology Council is challenging HP's Dynamic Security practice of bricking third-party ink cartridges via firmware updates, citing that such practices are now explicitly prohibited under the GEC's EPEAT 2.0 registry launched in December 2025. EPEAT 2.0 requires registered products to not prevent the use of remanufactured cartridges, offering manufacturers specific compliance options including refraining from disabling firmware updates.
