A groundbreaking study by Cambridge and UC Irvine researchers reveals that Britain's turnpike toll system played a far more critical role in the Industrial Revolution than previously recognized, systematically improving road quality and reducing freight costs from the 1760s onward. Analyzing nearly 100 travelers' diaries documenting 350,000 miles of journeys, the team found roads were 78% more likely to meet acceptable standards between 1760-1820 compared to 1660-1759, directly enabling the expansion of internal trade and regional specialization.
