Encyclopedia Britannica is suing OpenAI for allegedly ‘memorizing’ its content with ChatGPT

Encyclopedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it used their copyrighted content to train GPT-4 and that the model can reproduce near-verbatim copies of their text on demand. Britannica also claims OpenAI is cannibalizing its web traffic by generating responses that substitute for its original content. This adds to a growing wave of publisher copyright suits against AI companies, following similar actions by The New York Times and a $1.5 billion settlement by Anthropic.
