DOD says Anthropic’s ‘red lines’ make it an ‘unacceptable risk to national security’

The U.S. Department of Defense filed a 40-page rebuttal arguing Anthropic poses an 'unacceptable risk to national security,' citing concerns the company might disable or alter its AI model during warfighting operations if its corporate 'red lines' are crossed. Anthropic, which signed a $200M Pentagon contract last summer, had objected to its AI being used for mass surveillance or lethal targeting decisions, prompting the DOD to label it a supply chain risk. A preliminary injunction hearing is set for next Tuesday, with amicus briefs from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and legal rights groups supporting Anthropic.
