Ancient Cockroaches Harbor Thousands of Bacterial Genes

This study shows that horizontal gene transfer—where genes from one species are incorporated into a genetically distant species—occurs far more frequently in multicellular animals than scientists previously thought, with cockroaches harboring thousands of bacterial genes. The discovery challenges the traditional evolutionary model where species develop traits independently, suggesting that genetic exchange between distantly related organisms plays a far larger role in evolution than long assumed.
