Gemma 4 at the Edge: Open-Source AI Powers Low-Cost, Autonomous IoT Systems

This project demonstrates that open-source language models like Gemma 4 can handle real IoT control on cheap edge hardware, eliminating expensive cloud inference while preserving low latency. Running entirely on a $25 microcontroller, the system enables natural language control—transforming traditional rigid IoT systems into flexible, agentic agents. The work signals a critical inflection point: open-source models are now mature and practical enough to replace cloud-based solutions for home automation and beyond.
