Chest Fridge

A chest fridge, converted from a Vestfrost freezer, consumes only about 0.1 kWh/day by leveraging the natural behavior of cold air sinking, unlike conventional vertical-door fridges that waste at least 1 kWh/day. After 20 years of promoting chest fridges and selling freezer-to-fridge conversion kits in Australia, many manufacturers now offer chest freezers with temperature control up to +6°C. The author replaced the old Vestfrost with two CHiQ hybrid inverter freezers, which together use about 0.18–0.4 kWh/day and offer lower peak power demand suitable for off-grid systems.
