A new glass-based data storage technology capable of storing 4.8TB of data on a 120mm x 2mm glass plate has been developed by Microsoft researchers. The data can reportedly be preserved for at least 10,000 years, making it a potential long-term archival solution. The technology uses femtosecond laser pulses to encode data in a 3D structure within the glass, and has been tested through accelerated aging experiments. While the technology is still in the research stage, it could offer advantages over traditional tape-based archiving systems in terms of data longevity and resistance to environmental factors.
